I hate Joseph Conrad. I feel stupid when I read his novels, like there is something lacking in my brain to comprehend the deeper meaning. When "Heart of Darkness" was transformed into "Apocalyse Now", I had that feeling. And now that "Secret Agent" is out on video, I can feel inadequate at home too. Maybe you don't share my brain defect and can appreciate the symbolism, the subtext. As for me, I just enjoyed seeing Bob Hoskins, Patricia Arquette, Christian Bale and Gerard Depardieu work together. But "Secret Agent" isn't a feel-good, James Bond sort of Secret Agent movie. Conrad desribes it as "an anarchistic tale of desolation, madness and despair". Good thing it wasn't him pitching it to Hollywood. Rated R.
