"Rhythm Thief," director/co-writer Matthew Harrison's cool, sizzlingly acted drama about a
music bootlegger who peddles his tunes on the unlovelier streets of New York's Lower East
Side, one eye always out for the bands he's ripped off. For a movie that seems as tough as
a cockroach, this one has remarkably sentimental underpinnings and lovely visual conceits
(like the half-mad messages written on everything from apartment walls to a young girl's
arms.)
