I figured that since Matt LeBlanc is hot stuff, just like the rest of the
"Friends" cast, that he would get a hot script. Well, I was wrong.
I also figured that at least the baseball player and chimp story would
be entertaining to kids, but I was wrong again. LeBlanc is a pitcher that
chokes, Jayne Brook from TV's "Chicago Hope" is the waitress he
falls for and Jack Warden in a career low is the team manager. The kids
in the audience laughed at the occasional potty jokes, while I wondered
what the running time was. The PG rated "Ed" is 94 minutes.
It just seems longer.
The problem may be not just David Mickey Evans' script but Bill Couturie's
plodding direction. His background is in serious work, documentary work
like "Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt", "Earth and
the American Dream", and "Loyalty and Betrayal: The Story of the
American Mob". Just the training ground for a sight gags and chimp
antics, right? Oh, and the fakey chimp made me wish that Amy from "Congo"
would show up with the nasty gorillas and rip it's lousy special effects
head off. "Ed" has three strikes and its out!
