KATRIN CARTLIDGE - Hannah
CAREER GIRLS marks Katrin Cartlidge's second collaboration with Mike Leigh,
following her appearance as Sophie in the award-winning NAKED, for which
she won the Best European Feminine Hope at the 1993 Stars de Demain in Geneva.
Last year, Cartlidge gave a highly-acclaimed performance in Lars von Trier's
BREAKING THE WAVES, as Dodo, the devoted sister-in-law of Bess (Emily Watson).
Cartlidge joined the Royal Court Youth Theatre while still at school and
worked in fringe theater both in London and Edinburgh. On the London stage
she has appeared at both the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Court.
Named European Actress of the year at the Geneva Film Festival in 1993 for
her performance in NAKED, Cartlidge went on to appear in Milcho Manchevski's
BEFORE THE RAIN (winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival)
and most recently completed filming Lodge Kerrigan's (CLEAN, SHAVEN) latest
film in New York with Vincent D'Onofrio. Cartlidge has also participated
in Lars von Trier's experimental film DIMENSION which is being made over
a number of years with various actors he has worked with including Jean-Marc
Barr and Udo Kier.
LYNDA STEADMAN - Annie
Making her film debut in CAREER GIRLS, Lynda Steadman is best known to UK
television audiences as one of the stars of the hit series "Thief Takers."
She was also seen in the first series of the highly acclaimed "Between
The Lines," as the wronged wife of Neil Pearson's protagonist, and
can currently be seen in Jimmy McGovern's Channel Four series "Hearts
and Minds" opposite Christopher Eccleston.
An experienced stage actress, Steadman did a one woman show of "Medea"
in London and has played the title role in "Mother Courage." She
wrote, directed and performed the play "From Angel to Old Street"
at the Edinburgh Festival, and has made several stage appearances in her
native Northern Ireland, including the role of Pegeen in "The Playboy
of the Western World" at the Lyric Theater, Belfast.
KATE BYERS - Claire
CAREER GIRLS is Kate Byers' second film, following a small role in the comedy
STAGGERED. She has appeared in several television productions, and in leading
roles in some of the UK's most prestigious regional theaters, including
Bristol Old Vic and the Royal Exchange in Manchester. She played Miranda
in "The Tempest" for Michael Bogdanov and the ESC.
MARK BENTON - Ricky
Mark Benton makes his feature film debut in CAREER GIRLS following extensive
work in British television and appearances with some of the UK's most acclaimed
theater companies, including the Royal National Theatre ("Accidental
Death of an Anarchist," "Invisible Friends"), Cheek By Jowl
("As You Like It") and the Royal Shakespeare Company ("Richard
Ill").
ANDY SERKIS - Mr. Evans
CAREER GIRLS marks Andy Serkis' first collaboration with Mike Leigh. Serkis
is a highly-acclaimed stage actor in London, most notably for his performance
in the awardwinning Royal Court Theatre production of Jez Butterworth's
"Mojo," in which he originated the role of Potts. In autumn '96,
Serkis recreated this role in Butterworth's film adaptation of the play.
Serkis most recently appeared on the London stage in an acclaimed version
of David Rabe's "Hurlyburly." He has also made numerous television
appearances on such popular British programs as "The Bill," "The
Darling Buds of May," "Pie in the Sky," and "The Chief."
JOE TUCKER - Adrian
Joe Tucker first worked with Mike Leigh on his last stage play, "It's
a Great Big Shame!" which also featured SECRETS & LIES star Marianne
Jean-Baptiste. Tucker has also appeared on stage, in films (including Angela
Pope's CAPTIVES and a small part in SECRETS & LIES) and in several popular
UK television series including "The Bill," "Thief Takers"
and "Pie In the Sky."
