Southwestern Checkpoint

by Leslie Rigoulot

April 9, 1996

The Taos Talking Pictures Festival was dealt a major blow when Its 1996 Maverick Award Tributee, Ben Johnson, passed away this last Monday, April 8th. The Festival has been dedicated to his memory and his manager, Buster Brown, will be at the Festival to accept.

Opening night will see Stanley Tucci and Campell Scott's "Big Night" screened. Tony Shaloub, who stars as one of two brothers trying to keep the family restaurant open in the 1950's, will be on hand for the April 18th event.

Edward James Olmos will be honored and his new flick "Caught" will be featured.

In what has to be a unique award, the Taos Land and Film Company and the Independent Film Channel are awarding five acres of land on the scenic Taos Mesa to the most innovative filmmaker or videographer who best explores new frontiers in terms of theme, style, or creative use of media. Now that is a true prize!
